George Washington Birthplace National Monument

1732 Popes Creek Road

George Washington was America’s first and greatest hero whose leadership was crucial to the establishment of the United States as an independent nation founded on the principles of personal liberty. George Washington Birthplace National Monument preserves the heart of the Washingtons’ plantation and the Washington Family Burial Ground. A Memorial House and dependencies were constructed in 1931 near the location of the original Washington home. Here, in the peace and beauty of this place untouched by time, the staunch character of our hero comes to the imagination.

Nice park to visit. It’s doable in an hour or so. The memorial house is open for Ranger led tours. Just check with the visitor’s Center for when the next tour will be. The area is very peaceful and calm, much like Mt Vernon. There is also a nice picnic area with a pavilion and restrooms to the left of the entrance, along with a beach farther down. The picnic area, burial grounds, and beach are open until sunset. The bugs were in force one hot day, so recommend bug spray.

As a lover of history and licensed tour guide, I found this both informative and a relaxing atmosphere. Gave good context into Washington's background and better understand his family's history. Also, seems very kid-friendly. Lots of open lawn space around the houses.

Nice walk by the river. When we went, the staff was dressed in character and the kids were able to make soap. Unfortunately for us it rained, but it's a beautiful area and a great place to take the kids.

My favorite place in Virginia. Go there and see for yourself. You'll quickly learn why George Washington loved it!!!
