Colonial Beach - George Washington Birthplace National Monument

1732 Popes Creek Road

George Washington was America’s first and greatest hero whose leadership was crucial to the establishment of the United States as an independent nation founded on the principles of personal liberty. George Washington Birthplace National Monument preserves the heart of the Washingtons’ plantation and the Washington Family Burial Ground. A Memorial House and dependencies were constructed in 1931 near the location of the original Washington home. Here, in the peace and beauty of this place untouched by time, the staunch character of our hero comes to the imagination.

Great picnic area and easy trail. My 3 1/2 year old was able to walk it with no problem. Just needed to hold his hand going up and down some of the small hills and when near the water.

Beautiful, historic grounds nestled along the waterfront. The Park Ranger giving the house tour was an amazing orator! His presentation was informative, fun, and full of rhythm and grace. I would recommend a visit just to experience his performance. I didn't plan to visit on the day I did visit. I was returning home from a weekend in Virginia when I saw the classic brown sign, and HAD to stop by. So my agenda was simple curiosity. I wished I had more time to spend. There is a small beach which you can enjoy. There are trails (I walked one briefly), and plenty of historical significance. The views are lovely. I was very lucky to make it for the house tour just shortly after my arrival.

Nice little monument for the birthplace of George Washington. Great beach and park area! Great place to bike as well and take your date too. However, the memorial area is somewhat small and could be improved upon. Still a fun place to visit however and free admission!

Lots of great stuff to do here. The visitors center side is beautifully landscaped, with the memorial house and a working farm. Across the creek there are nature tails, a picnic area and a small beach where you can find sharks teeth! There are frequently special programs here. Best of all, free admission!
